Democracy and Hedging Language

What is Hedging Language?

Hedging language is the language you use in academic writing to show you accept other statements/arguments.

•In our everyday lives, using hedging language is a good communication skill in order to avoid conflicts.

•If you are being less direct in your language, you tell people, that you respect their different opinions.

"Conflict is the basis on which democracies are formed."

"Democratic societies are able to manage such conflict non-violently."

This is the opinion of the United States Institute of Peace. Do you agree?

Practice What You Have Learnt

Discuss whether you think we have democracy in Iraqi Kurdistan. Write a discussion essay (200 -250 words). Write your hedging language in bold.

                                                                       Democracy in Iraqi Kurdistan

                                                                                      By Sitav

Democracy is a form of leading government in which people choose their own leaders by voting. In a democratic government, the highest power should be held by the people, and it is usually applied by representatives. In this essay, democracy in Iraqi-Kurdistan will be discussed.

It seems that in Iraqi-Kurdistan democracy is not fully practiced. However, we are trying to accomplish this issue. It is clear that the region has the basic infrastructures to establish a standard democracy although further improvements are needed.

Hopefully, people in Iraqi-Kurdistan will choose their own president by voting whether it will be directly or indirectly by choosing their favorite political party. In addition, most people within the region seem to live in peace all together despite the diverse religious and ethnic groups.

One concerning issue is that not all members of parliament have the correct qualifications to do their job. For example, some of them are not working in their own field of expertise, and it could cause problematic issues.

Although Iraqi-Kurdistan has made several steps towards a more democratic government, there are still several unresolved issues which need to be addressed. By addressing these issues it is hoped that the future Iraqi Kurdistan will become more democratic.
